“Stimulating a new approach to art, history and culture, by generating a more participatory, enjoyable and engaging vision of these sectors that are so rich and stimulating”. This is the vision, expressed by the Councilor for Culture Valerio Melandri, of the 2022 edition of the Caterina Sforza Festival in Forlì, “a figure of great inspiration for the city and its culture. Guided by the fighting spirit and extraordinary spirit of Caterina, these days they will be perfect to dig into the past, understand the present and imagine the future not only of Forlì but of the whole world”.
Melandri, who discusses the theme of the festival dedicated to the “tiger of Romagna” in his blog, reflects on the concept of culture, a term “so beautiful and so full of content. I believe that culture has no taste or a sensitivity, but gives everyone the tools to understand their preference and inclination towards something I am certainly not the one who has to tell those who listen to me that it is more beautiful, for example the red or the yellow color, as as many people as possible give the means so that they able to independently understand what their favorite color is”. And the “Caterina Sforza Festival of Forlì 2022. The non-conformist”, this year in its second edition, the Commissioner said, “fits perfectly in this perspective, because it wants to create a cultural awareness that encourages the public to enjoy a free and independent manner”.
“The initiative dedicated to the Countess of Forlì perfectly represents the idea I have of culture – adds Melandri -: the Festival and its Preview (which will be held respectively from 16 to 18 June and from 5, 12 and 19 May) in fact, a new approach to art, history and culture, evoking a more participatory, enjoyable and attractive vision of these sectors so rich and stimulating”. But why focus on the figure of Caterina Sforza? Because he is “one of the most emblematic of the Italian Renaissance”, “a figure of great inspiration for Forlì and its culture: in a male-dominated era, he wrote in a letter” I have the brain of Duke Galeazzo and I am fantastic like him “, attesting to a strong and indomitable character. Tenacious and with a personality projected to the future,” La tigre di Romagna “was able to rule two important lordships perpetually threatened by wars and conspiracies, and has a strongly influenced the national political context of the time”.
“Caterina Sforza is therefore the symbol of an avant-garde, modern, curious and unconventional city – underlines the Commissioner -; who better than them to represent the cultural renewal that we have carried out in recent years? extraordinary of Caterina, today will be perfect to deepen the past, understand the present and imagine the future, not only of Forlì but of the whole world. We will improve Caterina in two ways, by returning the historical context of reference to the public and to the stages that they will project into the contemporary world the distinctive features of this character, primarily his maverick being”.
Melandri explains the content of the event: “With the new artistic direction of the actress and writer Eleonora Mazzoni, Forlì will see the three days of June animated by encounters, shows, words, music, art, history and food to participate , to understand, to listen, to know, to nourish the mind, to dream and to question ourselves about our timeliness.. Exponents of culture, entertainment, journalism and entrepreneurship of national importance will be involved, making cross-cutting contributions, with a refined and cultivated cut but at the same time , informative and understandable to the public, young and mature. With a multidisciplinary theme and methodologies, the festival and the preview will also have a widespread dimension, filling the spaces of the San Domenico Arena, the candle factory, the town hall, Piazza Saffi , the Barcaccia, the refectory of the San Domenico museums, Piazza and via Dante Alighieri and via Theodoli”.
To anticipate the June Festival, there will be three days in May, aimed at students and citizens as a whole to get closer to the figure of Catherine and historically contextualize the female figure between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The three meetings of the Preview will be hosted by Maria Giuseppina Muzzarelli, professor of medieval history, history of cities and history and cultural heritage of fashion at the University of Bologna. With cross-sectional studies on fashion and luxury, the role of women and the female relationship with motherhood and food behind him, Muzzarelli is part of the scientific committee of “Past and Pre-sent”, Paolo Mieli’s program on Rai Storia.
The meeting “Women and power. Power in the Hands of Women’ to reflect on the power women have assumed in politics, business and other fields. On May 12 at 11 am, the meeting “Healing and care: a line of female behavior” will be held in the Fabbrica delle Candele to analyze the functions of care and the exclusion of formal knowledge related to medical treatments that women have undergone. On May 19 at 11 am in the Candle Factory with “The language of clothing in the time of Cateri-na di Sforza”, the theme of the social, symbolic and economic value of fashion in the time of Caterina will be explored.
The most substantial part of the review will come to life from June 16 to 18, with different moments and different modalities. In the late afternoon, the refectory of the San Domenico Museums will host talk shows with the participation of politicians, businesswomen, journalists, scientists and showwomen. Starting at 9 PM, the San Domenico Arena hosts shows that combine theatre, music and poetry with nationally known performers. New this year is the village, active from Friday afternoon 17: in Piazza Dante Alighieri, via Alighieri, via Theodoli and Area Barcaccia will be historical reenactments, workshops and craft markets with products inspired by Caterina Sforza, a food truck area, a food and wine and entertainment village dedicated to all citizens.
