In recent days, following a question presented to the Provincial Council, a new problem has emerged related to the discussed concert by Vasco Rossi in Trento, the largest event organized in Trentino in recent years in terms of number of expected spectators, size of the area and investments. The provincial councilor of Europa Verde, Lucia Coppola, asked the president of the autonomous province Maurizio Fugatti if it is not appropriate to protect the M49 bear from the high level of decibels produced by the concert scheduled for 20 May.

The M49 bear, the protagonist of two escapes in recent years, is located inside the Casteller forest nursery, a few hundred meters from the Trento Music Arena, an area of 27 hectares in San Vincenzo, south of Trento, between the Brenner railway, a road and the Casteller hill. Coppola says that the Province, organizer of the event, should involve the veterinarians of the forest nursery to implement “all possible actions to reduce the frightening damage”, even with the help of mild sedatives with effects limited to the hours of the concert, so as not to compromise the health of the bear.

A debate has been going on for years on the presence and management of brown bears in Trentino, where the animals were reintroduced in the 1990s. The growth of the population, which took place in a small area and where many people live, has made encounters between bears and humans more frequent, which in some cases have created major problems. For this reason, the Trentino authorities have been trying for some time to have greater control over bears, also using methods harshly contested by associations for the defense of animals.

Several newspapers, taking advantage of the title of a Vasco Rossi song, wrote that M49 had a “reckless life”. In fact, in recent years M49 has been the protagonist of two sensational escapes. On 14 July 2019, following an order signed by the President of the Province Maurizio Fugatti, he was captured in the municipality of Porte di Rendena. Taken to the Casteller forest nursery, he managed to escape the next day by climbing over a four-meter-high barrier and three electrified fences.

On 30 April 2020, after several sightings, M49 was captured in Val Rendena, thanks to a tube trap. He stayed in the Casteller enclosure for a few months, then on July 27, 2020 he managed to escape again. He broke through the metal mesh by breaking the welds. Thanks to a radio collar, the Forestry staff was able to monitor his movements on the Lagorai mountain range.

On 27 August the radio collar was found on the ground. The third capture took place between 6 and 7 September 2020, in Val Cion. Since then M49 has remained in the Casteller enclosure. “Unlike other animals, which can move away from the areas close to the concert, M49 has no alternative: he is imprisoned,” explains Coppola. “It is the province’s duty to reduce the impact of this concert and make the imprisonment less painful.” The councilor recalls that in the past, when the forest nursery housed two other bears, M57 and DJ3, there were episodes of self-harm due to the noise caused by a construction site. The bears moved compulsively and were slightly sedated for this.

President Fugatti will have to answer Coppola’s question on Tuesday, but the health of M49 is only one of the many problems caused by Vasco Rossi’s concert, an event that seems to have reached very demanding dimensions and costs for an institution like the Province of Trento. . Two weeks after the concert, the provincial supervisory commission has not yet given an opinion on the organization of the extensive security measures. In Trento, a city of just under 120 thousand inhabitants, a total of 110 thousand people are expected: 120 thousand tickets are sold, of which 11 thousand bought by the inhabitants of Trento. There will be 10 thousand people, including volunteers and employees, on duty for reception and safety.

The Province began working on security measures in January, involving the police, firefighters and civil protection. The Director General of Civil Protection, Raffaele De Col, told al Dolomites that the area is 95 percent ready. According to President Fugatti “everything will take place regularly, while the inconveniences will be limited”.

Many of the controversies in recent months have concerned the costs of organizing the concert, borne by the Province of Trento. The councilors of the Democratic Party Luca Zeni and Alessio Manica consulted all the published resolutions to calculate the costs incurred by the body. According to the estimates of the opposition councilors, the event will cost 6.5 million euros. The general set-up costs are 1.6 million, the refurbishment of the San Vincenzo area cost just under 3 million euros. The costs for the personnel involved in the organization, again according to an estimate by the directors, reached one million euros. And still one million euros is the cost of removing and relocating the vaccine point that was located in the concert area a few months ago.

The research office of Confcommercio of Trento has worked on an investigation to understand what the economic impact of the concert will be on the territory. The study says that each Italian spectator will spend an average of 121 euros, while foreign spectators will spend 113 euros. According to the survey, the concert will guarantee the Trento area an economic benefit of 6.1 million euros.

During the presentation of the concert, in July of last year, President Fugatti said that the related activities would be between 15 and 20 million euros. “Above all, the great promotional value for our territory should be highlighted,” said Fugatti. «We know the numbers that Vasco Rossi can do, and with these numbers success is assured. For us it is a source of pride to be able to say that we have brought Vasco Rossi to Trentino ».

Among other things, the Autonomous Province has reserved some generous benefits for the singer such as transport by helicopter from the concert venue to the Trentino location in which he will reside during the week of the dress rehearsal, the welcome to all the staff with expenses for a maximum limit. of 300 thousand euros, an exhibition dedicated to Vasco, the conferral of the Eagle of Wenceslaus, the highest provincial honor, and even the naming of a street or a square.
