Aracati gives impetus to economic recovery with event tourism

With almost 50 km of coastline that includes dunes, cliffs, free beaches and coves, Aracati, which is 150 km from Fortaleza, has established itself as a sun and sea tourism, attracting tourists from all over the world to discover its beauties. But since 2017 the municipality has distinguished itself for the organization of major events, favoring the economic development of the region.

“Event tourism represents a driving force of the economy, moving it from the spread of the city, passing through the hotel park, restaurants, rental houses, supermarkets, pharmacies, bakeries, petrol stations, almost the ‘entire production chain ”, analyzes Joseni Soares de Souza, Secretary of Tourism and Culture of Aracati. “Here lies the great importance of the events, they increase the collection of taxes and, consequently, the revenues,” he adds.

This month the city prepares to host important events and save the strength of post-pandemic tourism, with three programs involving sports, gastronomy, entertainment and religious festivals.

On Friday 15, from 4 pm, there will be the traditional representation of the Passion of Christ, in the Quixaba district. The set-up has existed for more than 20 years and sees the participation of families of fishermen and local artisans who make all the scenic furnishings. “People experience the show as part of the figuration, following scene by scene. And the apotheosis is in the Arena da Paixão, with the beautiful view of the beach and the white cliffs ”, says the Secretary.

On April 16 and 17, Saturday and Sunday evening, the municipality will host concerts by Bell Marques and Zé Vaqueiro respectively. The parties will be held on Avenida do Ginásio, in the Cacimba do Povo neighborhood, at the entrance to Aracati. The event will take place in a fenced area, subject to a fee for the 3-dose vaccine passport. “Everything is done together with the security agencies, such as Fire Brigade and Military Police, who are following the entire planning of the event”, reinforces the manager. And on the 20th the show by Léo Santana takes place in Canoa Quebrada.

To close the month of April, Praia de Canoa Quebrada will host the Brazilian University Beach Games of 2022. From April 28 to May 4, over 1200 athletes from all over Brazil will participate in the tournament.

The events sector recovers

With the pandemic, the events sector was one of the hardest hit in the economy, with 97% of companies in the sector having a negative impact, according to the Brazilian Association of Event Promoters (Abrape). Aracati, which has about 92 hotels and inns and 196 restaurants, bars and the like, has suffered losses along the entire production chain.

“The restrictive measures have canceled all events of all sizes, involving thousands of workers in the area, leaving a huge loss for everyone. In addition, the whole chain of freelancers such as street vendors, snacks, coconut water, various drinks, popsicle sellers, strollers, quads, tourist guides, etc. [foi afetada]”, Specifies the Secretary.

The flexibility of the Covid-19 prevention protocols has given the sector a new spirit to work on the economic recovery of the municipality of Aracati. According to a 2019 study by the Fundação Getúlio Vargas, for every 1 royal invested in event tourism, R $ 13 is returned to the economy. Aracati and its people well recognize the importance of the sector. The economy of the city, with 40,000 inhabitants in the site alone, heats up for months after the events ”, observes the manager.

Programs such as Carnival, Gastronomic Festival, São João and Virada Cultural have included Aracati in the national calendar of events, which have proved to be great opportunities for economic development for the region. Of these, Carnival is one of the largest in the state, with an audience of 450,000 per night, according to a 2019 survey by the Vale do Jaguaribe Institute.

“Events are a driving force, even among those who do not go to the event itself, but visit the city, come with friends and enjoy all the beaches of Aracati during the day. Others come with families, as only children attend the events and then we consolidate the destination for all ages, with infrastructure to easily serve all the public, ”emphasizes Joseni Soares de Souza.
