“The Ferragnez go to..WITH GALA”† This sentence published by Chiara Ferragnic in an Instagram post to unleash the enthusiasm and spotlight America’s quintessential global event: the with Gala† And if this name doesn’t mean much to you, then this piece is for you: below you will find in fact everything you need to know about this long-awaited appointment and you will understand why the presence of the Ferragnez is another (yet another) stroke of genius scored by the digital entrepreneur. Needless to say, after the two previous editions that had been kept quiet due to the Covid pandemic, this year the Met Gala is back in top form: everything revolves around gold, the color symbol of wealth, well-being and carefree, but also a symbol of rebirth and cultural change. Expectations are also skyrocketing because it is whispered that Anna Wintourthe director of Vogue America and honorary co-chair of the event, has created the most important and memorable edition of his career, with a red carpet ready to go down in history.
WHAT’S WITH GALA? In fact it is the pinnacle of American fashion, in practice the Costume Institute Gala – this is its “official” name – it is a gala that has been held every year since 1948 with the aim of raising money for the benefit of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The evening traditionally coincides with the opening of the annual fashion show organized by the Costume Institutethat inspired the theme and dress code of the event (more on that later).
WHEN WILL IT BE HELD? This year it will return to its “standard” calendar for which the Gala is to be held the first Monday of May: appointment therefore today, May 2, from 6 pm (local time in New York, midnight in Italy).
WHERE IS IT? To the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New Yorkcommonly called “Met”: hence the name Met Gala.
THE THEME AND THE DRESS CODE – As we said, this edition is a candidate to be remembered as the most luxurious ever, thanks also to the theme chosen: “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”As usual, inspired by the Costume Institute exhibition that opens on May 7. Hence the dress code “The Gilded Glamor”“, it is to say “The Golden Glamor”† A highly evocative definition inspired by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner’s 1873 masterpiece, “The Gilded Age: A Story of Today”the first to define that”Golden AgeLived by America in the last thirty years of the nineteenth century (from 1870 to about 1900). Years of tremendous technical and industrial development, as well as economic growth, marked a marked change of pace for the US. A plunge into the past at the moment of this magical night, an escape from the dramatic reality we experience in the name of gold, glitter, feathers and retro-inspired fringes, long gloves and an abundance of jewels. Sources of inspiration can be two great films based on two novels by Edith Wharton, The Age of Innocence by Martin Scorsese e the house of joy, directed by Terence Davies. But there is also a TV series, which happens to be one of the most anticipated this year, to give us an idea of the mood: needless to say “The Gilded Age”† But be careful: not all that glitters is gold. If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the years, it’s that the Met Gala red carpet is the perfect opportunity to launch political messages through the language of fashion.† Just think of the dress from Alexandra Coasio Cortez or to that of Cara Delevingne in last September’s edition. Let alone Kim Kardashian and her all-black Balenciaga jumpsuit to signify the upliftment of the individual (particularly of women) in today’s “social” society.
THE GUESTS – The guest list it is absolutely top secret. The only certain names at the moment are those of the gods ferragnez, who “ruined” their attendance at the event and confirmed the rumors circulating on social media. It is then waiting for Rihanna (with his baby bump that could make his participation jump to the last) e Sarah Jessica Parker (almost permanent presence of the event). Great absent it should be instead Zendaya, both the actress of the moment and the muse of Pierpaolo Piccioli, the creative director of Valentino: indeed it seems that she is stuck on the set for the shooting of her new film. For the rest, there is only one certainty: everyone wants to be invited to the Met Gala, but it is Anna Wintour herself who selects the guests by drawing from the most influential names in the world of fashion, but also of film, music, sports (in 2021 the tennis player Matteo Berrettini he was the only Italian invited, to say), from institutions and culture.
THE PRESENTATION OF THE EVENING – They will be the actress Blake Lively with her husband and colleague Ryan Reynoldsthe actress and director Regina King and the actor and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda to host this year’s Met Gala; while Tom Ford, the CEO of Instagram Adam Mosseric And Anna Wintour they will continue their roles as honorary presenters, as happened last September with the inauguration of the first part of the Costume Institute’s exhibition “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”.
HOW DOES IT WORK – No one knows exactly what will happen in the course of the evening. In fact, the strict regulation of the event prohibits all attendees from posting photos and videos on social networks and this helps to heighten the aura of mysterious mystery and voracious admiration for the Met Gala. What is certain is that the focus of everything is the red carpet, with arrivals staggered to avoid “traffic jams” between stars: the first guests arrive around 5:30 PM – 6:00 PM (New York time) and the last can arrive hours later, even after 8:00 PM (always local time). The fashion expert of the NNew York Times† Vanessa Friedman, had long ago revealed that after the catwalk there is the honor of the “hosts”, who welcome their guests. Then we start with the preview visit to the exhibition and then we go to the room where the cocktail is set up first, then dinner and the ensuing party with show (which changes from year to year depending on the theme). The cost of the tickets would be about 35 thousand dollars, while the amount for booking a table ranges from 200 thousand to 300 thousand dollars.the. Money that, as we recall, is the primary source of annual funding for the Met’s Costume Institute exhibits, publications, and activities.
HISTORY – Every year New York – and in particular the Metropolitan Museum of Art – transforms itself into the epicenter of world glamour, the “place to be” where all the most influential personalities from the worlds of entertainment and fashion come together for one evening every year, with the intention of to compete to overcome the flashes of the photographers. This has been more or less the case since 1948, when the brilliant and versatile former chief executive officer of Fashion Diana Vreeland laid the foundation for what would later become “the party of the year”† The goal was already to raise money for the Costume Institute, but then it was “just” a midnight dinner with an entrance fee of $50: Since 1973, the Met Gala has gradually become popular around the world and has become the event of choice for New York high society, but not only. Since 1995, the director of Vogue America Anna Wintour took over the organization and made it the most exclusive event in the world, and the most effective fundraising event, with a record $12 million raising in 2014.
HOW TO FOLLOW IT – You can use the . follow live streaming from the red carpet on the Met website or via the Metropolitan Museum’s Instagram, Facebook and Twitter profiles, starting at 6 p.m. local time (midnight Italian time). However, once the arrivals are over, the doors close and the broadcasts end. What happens in the Met stays in the Met. You have been warned.
